Burmese plate

Last week, after hearing about a slice of Burmese history in Madras - which I was completely unaware of until then - it was absolutely coincidental to come across this sign.

There must be a few other Burmese outlets in Chennai, but I can't remember any of them off the top of my head!

  1. Many years ago, there was a Burma evacuee colony near Red Hills on the Madras Calcutta Highway. There must have have been about 100 or so families living there. Men and women tied their lungi's at chest height! Also, the owner of Kennedy Book House, Mr. Krishnan, at Rayala center, Mount Road, was a Burma evacuee and known to my father. lastly, we had petrol bunk brands like Burma Shell ! Also Esso, Caltex etc!
